My friend Dave (DJN) and his family are moving here from Blackpool in the UK. This past week, I’ve had the pleasure of helping him drive most of their family possessions—along with some of his photography kit—out to their new house in the Bulgarian mountains.
It was an unforgettable driving experience and a proper road trip. Because of insurance rules and Dave’s expensive camera gear, we couldn’t leave the van unattended. That meant sleeping in the vehicle for a rather smelly, but absolutely fantastic, four days.
We traveled through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Romania, finally crossing into Bulgaria late Wednesday night and making our way to the house in Ganchovets.
The rest of the week has been all hands on deck: cleaning and organizing beds for Dave’s entire brood. It was quite a challenge trying to find a bed shop, let alone speaking the language well enough to organize the delivery of six beds and mattresses! But by Thursday afternoon, we had it pretty much sorted.
I’ve been itching to get out with my camera. I managed to sneak away for an hour today, but I completely understand why Dave is currently more focused on sorting out the house. However, on Sunday (my last full day), we are finally heading out to shoot. I’m hoping to capture a few more great frames from this trip up into the mountains.
Thanks for stopping by!

Very impressive! It’s like a captured frame from an old black-and-white film. I think the image is more telling than if it would be in colours. Here, many details like the sun flashing on the wheels or the filthy door are much more noticeable. But can’t say if the gipsy man wears a gold or steel watch… 🙂
Thanks for all your help over in BG last week, it was much appreciated mate.
Oh, and cool shot too: I just wish we’d had a bit more time to go out shooting – maybe next time you visit 🙂
love the tone
I have to agree with VJJ that this a cracking shot with lovely light. Enjoy the rest of your stay and lay off of that cheap beer 😉
What a fabulous three dimensional shot with so much detail to take in beginning with the house nestled in the hillside in the background to the beautiful old cart and gentle looking horse in the foreground. I love the light and shadow that you have managed to capture in this photograph. In my opinion this is one of your best shots to date. Well done!
Damn, i’m loving it. Tone looks great, and i love the HDR-looking effects. You continue to impress!
