I decided to actually take a proper weekend off from pressing a shutter for once. I spent a good chunk of today just relaxing with the family, having a nice long lunch, and sharing a few drinks.
This shot down at Sandbanks is a relatively straight capture. I used the absolute widest end of the lens to really scoop up those weathered wooden fence posts and the sweeping textures of the sand, driving the perspective right through the dunes. I dropped in a few curve layers during post-production just to tweak the mid-tones and dial in that heavy, brooding mood in the sky.
Right now, I’m battling one of those “will it, won’t it” head colds, complete with a looming headache… I really hope it doesn’t turn into a full-blown thing.
Oh, and while I have the opportunity to add a quick line or two: I’ve had quite a few tweets asking about the processing method on this particular image. All I’m going to say is that while this isn’t an HDR composite, I did borrow a couple of clever tricks from DJN’s latest tutorial to get this specific high-contrast, dramatic effect. You can find the techniques buried in the later paragraphs of his recent HDR tutorial—I also left a comment about them over on his site if you want to track the discussion down.
Cheers… csj

beautiful shot!
Gorgeous shot here Craig.
Great picture!
I would name this shot ‘walkway to heaven’. A trudge through the sand, along the walkway into sand dunes and behold you are in the clouds and well on your way to heaven!
A very nice shot with bucket loads of atmosphere.(Excuse the pun) 🙂
Thanks Mum x
I’m always a fan of wide-angle shot like this – great processing & details too.
Very nice 🙂
cool grey tones and almosts silver proccess
Great angle and treatament. I don’t speak english. Apologizes.
Mate you’ve absolutely nailed this. The tonality is spot on for the subject, IMO, but you know how I like details, so whilst I like everything you’ve done here I love the half buried leaf in the foreground ;O)
Nicki: Thanks, if you ever need a lesson in curves I’d be happy to oblige at least in helping you towards an end point. Or cruise over to Chromasia and follow the curves Tutorial. Click the link to the right, thats where I learnt it…. csj
Eugene: Thanks, thats a very kind comment.Cheers means a lot… csj
Great capture – I love the tonal range in this photo, I’ve been trying to nail a similar shot whenever I go for a walk at our local beach, haven’t even got close to this!
Only just noticed that’s HDR – very subtle.
This one leaves a mystic feeling. I like this kind of “silver” toned pictures. If you produce such pictures it needs to be careful handling with tonecurves, and you did it. Someday, me to. ^^
Wow, great mood here indeed. Post-processing is spot-on!
